A native of West Branch, Iowa, Alex Miller recently moved back to the area from across the state and joined our team as a customer service representative in our feed ingredients division. Before joining our team at Stutsmans, he served as a retail feed specialist for NEW Cooperative in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, following graduation from Iowa State University where he earned his degree in animal science.

After receiving requests from his neighbors to bring supplies back from town, Eldon Stutsman realized there was a need for a feed supply business. Even though 1934 was a less-than-ideal time to start a business, Eldon started transitioning his milk route deliveries to feed supply deliveries. Little did he know how much change and growth his business, including the feed ingredients division, would experience in the next 90 years.

When it comes to our transportation and feed ingredients drivers, there’s no doubt that they exceed expectations and set the bar higher every day. Since the start of the million mile club in 2021, we’ve had 20 drivers reach the one-million-mile mark, five drivers hit two million miles, and one road warrior surpass three million miles.
As Sweet Lassy, a patented pelleted feed line from Schreiber Mills out of St. Joseph, Missouri, took off in popularity, two things became clear to Eldon Stutsman: transportation was a bigger need, and it was time to move closer to the rail to receive product.
In 1948, Eldon moved his business from his family’s farm to Hills, giving him direct access to the railroad. Sweet Lassy was now coming in by the trainloads — and with some creative thinking (and we’d say progressive for his time), Eldon launched a unique silver dollar promotion that would become a popular tradition for years to come.

Although most regions in the Midwest experienced drought-like conditions this year, we’ve had many calls in the past month from customers trying to tackle mold issues. Significant mold in feed can result in production losses between 5-10%, even without the presence of mycotoxins. Although not all molds produce toxins, the most common mycotoxins found in livestock diets include Aspergillus, Claviceps, Fusarium and Penicillium.
