Sweet Lassy, Railroads & Silver Dollars
As Sweet Lassy, a patented pelleted feed line from Schreiber Mills out of St. Joseph, Missouri, took off in popularity, two things became clear to Eldon Stutsman: transportation was a bigger need, and it was time to move closer to the rail to receive product.
In 1948, Eldon moved his business from his family’s farm to Hills, giving him direct access to the railroad. Sweet Lassy was now coming in by the trainloads — and with some creative thinking (and we’d say progressive for his time), Eldon launched a unique silver dollar promotion that would become a popular tradition for years to come.
For every ton of Sweet Lassy a customer bought off the train, Eldon would give them a silver dollar. Word spread, and sales gained steam quickly with this popular event.
Experience a Silver Dollar Sale
Schreiber Mills had a St. Joseph, Missouri, TV station cover one of Eldon’s silver dollar sales with aerial photos and videos to showcase the promotional event to other dealers.
