Deciphering Yard Fertilizer

AmberMay 1, 2018Agronomy, General

Fertilizing your crop is second nature but what about your yard? Did you know that a yard will typically use 1-4lbs of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet in a growing season? Or that one 50lb bag typically covers 5,000-10,000 square feet? Just like your crops, your yard needs nutrients to feed and nourish the grasses growing throughout them. Nitrogen adds growth and color while phosphorus is needed for adequate root growth. The last major nutrient you should be considering is potassium which aids in the overall health of your lawn. To help in your yard fertilizer selection process, we jotted down the best use for each of the products we carry.

#4682 | Greenskeeper’s Secret 20-10-10 Premium Fertilizer

This is our best selling fertilizer. For those lawns that are needing more nitrogen than phosphorus and potassium, we suggest this product to help balance your soil fertility.

#4684 | Greenskeeper’s Secret Crabgrass Preventer 25-0-06

Crabgrass preventer helps prevent unwanted grass species from growing before they start such as crabgrass, annual bluegrass, and foxtail. For best results, apply Crabgrass Preventer within a few days after mowing and delay mowing again for a few days after application.

#4680 | Greenskeeper’s Secret All Purpose 12-12-12

Contains a balanced analysis of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium for added greening power.  This is formulated to help disease resistance and thicken new & existing lawns.

#4681 | Greenskeeper’s Secret 6-24-24 Premium Fertilizer

This mix is ideal when your lawn is lacking in phosphorus and potassium.

#4688 | Greenskeeper’s Secret 13-13-13 Premium Fertilizer

Another balanced fertilizer for continued nutrient improvement. Monthly reapplication may be necessary depending on your lawn’s health.

Determining what fertilizer to apply to your yard is similar to identifying what your fields need. We suggest pulling a few soil samples and getting them tested for available nutrients. We also suggest leaving a 4-week window between fertilizer applications. If drought conditions exist, do not apply fertilizer.

We wish you a season of lush green grass free of weeds and pesky critters!

Volunteer corn, is it only cosmetic?

By: Justin Hunter | Agronomy Sales Surely, most farmers might cringe at the sight of volunteer corn in their soybean fields, but they may not think of it as impacting their bottom line.
