Scout’s Honor Weekly Report: May 15-19
It’s that time of year again! Our crop scouts have been working hard these past couple weeks visiting customers’ fields and reporting the information back. They are excited to share their knowledge and findings each day. *Every Friday during the summer we will feature their reports on the blog and our social media accounts; check in to see what’s happening in our community. We look forward to seeing the changes in the agriculture world this time of year and hope that you find the information to be helpful!
Stand Counts
Consistent, but on the lower side.
Stage
Towards the end of the week we saw a few bean fields start to emerge, but most of the fields we have scouted have been corn. The average corn stage we have found is V1.
Plant Conditions
Some of the corn plants we have seen have slight discoloration. The discoloration is because of the cold weather which occurred after planting. The sugars are taken in and built up within the plant creating a purple discoloration. The plant wants to grow but can’t due to minimal growing degree days.
Insects
Some corn fields that had rye as a cover crop, had army worms. We have also found bean leaf beetles chewing on some of the emerged soybean fields.
Weeds
We have found many kinds of weeds this week! Giant ragweed is a common issue in many of our fields (but most of them have been sprayed). We also found waterhemp varying in size but the major concern was the amount of waterhemp that was just emerging from the soil and carpeting the soil surface. These weeds need immediate attention before they become larger and harder to kill.
Territory Info
Soybeans in the south are already emerged, some of the cotyledons on the beans are yellow. The soybeans in the north are just being planted. Those that are planted in the north have not emerged yet.
Fun Facts
We have had a couple of friendly dogs join us in a few fields!
*The Scouts Honor Scouting Report will be posted every Friday as long as there are new findings in the field
