Tech Talk: Precision Planting vApplyHD & SmartFirmer
With all the updates on technology and precision equipment, it’s hard to keep track of what’s out there. Here are some of the new products that we think are worth keeping an eye on.
Precision Planting vApplyHD
Over the past few years, many growers have been adding liquid fertilizer to their planters. vApply is the industry’s first on-row liquid control product.
Features:
- Flow measurement and control
- Turn compensation
- Row swath
- Some vApply users have boasted a 20% product savings thanks to the row swath feature eliminating overlapping.
- Auto flow balancing
- Variable Rate prescription application
- We are constantly talking about the value Variable Rate Technology brings. vApply is another tool to help you apply the optimum rate in the optimum location for maximum efficiency.
Precision Planting SmartFirmer
You go through all the work to establish a planting plan to set your crop up for success. From fertilizer and pre-emerge to seed selection and planter updates, you are in control. But what about where your seed is getting placed? SmartFirmer is a sensor that detects organic matter, moisture, residue, and temperature in real time as you cross your field.
Features:
- Soil Moisture Sensing
- SmartFirmer’s ability to see soil moisture row-by-row, helps you adjust your planting depth as soil conditions fluctuate across your field
- Soil Temperature Sensing
- Germination time is dependent on soil temperature; having specific furrow readings gives you insight if you are running in ideal planting conditions.
- Residue Sensing & Furrow Uniformity
- In-furrow residue measurements help you adjust row cleaners to prevent disease transmission and ensure residue isn’t limiting moisture availability to the seed. Any irregularities in the furrow itself, like clods, is also identified to help you adjust row unit performance.
- Organic Matter Sensing
- We know organic matter plays a role in beneficial yield environments. SmartFirmer gives the power to automatically adjust population or even hybrid selection as the organic matter content changes throughout the field.
