Employee Spotlight: Tyson Miller
As the ProVantage advisor, Tyson Miller is responsible for all aspects of our ProVantage program as well as working directly with growers and the agronomy sales team to bring valuable insight from growers’ data.
This Kalona native graduated from Iowa State with a bachelor’s in horticulture and a minor in entrepreneurial studies which led him to an internship and eventually full-time work in the golf course industry. His portfolio includes helping prepare Medinah Country Club (IL) for the 2008 PGA Championship and the 2012 Ryder Cup along with completing five PGA tour events at TPC Scottsdale (AZ). Before coming on board in September, Tyson led the sales/housing and grounds maintenance teams as the VP of independent living for a multi-campus senior living community in Kansas.
Tyson and his wife Rachel decided to move back to Rachel’s family farm in rural Wellman to raise their two boys, Oliver and Ames. In his free time Tyson enjoys golfing, fishing, camping, or traveling with his family. Despite having helped mow and maintain the field at Kinnick (and Jack Trice Stadium), he and his boys are passionate Cyclone football and basketball fans.
What excites you about your job?
Learning the functions of technology within agriculture and keeping up with the evolution of technology in the coming years. Also, building relationships with co-workers and growers while finding new ways to keep our ProVantage program progressing as a valuable asset relative to growers’ needs.
What is the best advice you have ever been given?
In everything, do your best, then you can be satisfied with whatever the outcome is.
What is on your bucket list?
Traveling to Ireland and Scotland to experience the culture and visit the home of golf at Saint Andrews. Also, attending The Masters golf tournament.
Who has influenced your career the most?
Probably my parents early on and then my wife. I learned that few things in life were given and most everything was earned which created a personal drive in me to do what I found joy and satisfaction doing.
If you had to be a product that you work with, what would you be?
I would be potassium. I’m relative to the growing cycle, although not as popular as nitrogen. I’m not as controversial as phosphorus, but I am more active. I am trying to stay ahead of the competition: sulfur, zinc and boron. Lastly, I’m occasionally referred to as Tyler or Travis just as some confuse ‘P’ to mean potassium!
Which Stutsman Core Value means the most to you?
Value collaboration. I enjoy being a part of a team and believe we are stronger together than we are on our own. I’d also say radiate enthusiasm: my wife and kids often say I need to calm down!
