Baiting Strategies for Effective Rodent Control

With temperatures getting cooler, rodents are on the move and looking for warm places to stay. On top of this, weather patterns over the past few years have been ideal for reproduction. The recent increase in population makes rodent control more important now than ever. On top of being unwanted intruders, rats and mice pose a biosecurity risk spreading disease to humans and livestock alike. If that isn’t  bad enough, they cause feed loss from direct consumption as well as contamination. The destruction doesn’t stop there either; rodents cause structural damage to buildings and possible electrical fires from gnawing on wires. 

Here are some strategies for dealing with unwanted rodents around your home and farm:

Rodent control in and around homes:

Use Tomcat Disposable or Refillable Consumer bait stations

• Each block kills up to 12 mice
• Kid & Dog tested stations
• For use indoors and outdoors

Baiting strategies for inside homes:
(Tier 1 & 3 stations can also be used inside homes)

Use Tomcat Glue traps or Tomcat Mechanical Snap traps

• Tomcat Glue Traps are ready to use and easy to dispose
• Powerful adhesive holds rodents securely once they step on glue
• Tomcat mechanical traps are easy to use and work well along walls and in corners

Rodent control for in and around agricultural buildings:

• Inspection and Identification
  • Identify rodent signs, (droppings, burrows, gnaw marks) to determine size of infestation and where rodents are traveling
• Sanitation and Harborage Reduction
  • Remove rodents’ food and water source
  • Clean up spilled feed or grain that may attract rodents
  • Eliminate material rodents can use for shelter
• Perimeter of Property
  • Place tamper resistant Tomcat bait stations along perimeter of property
  • Use Bait Chunx secured inside bait stations on vertical or horizontal securing rods

Exterior Baiting

• Rodents tend to gravitate to warm currents or where food odors emerge
• Tomcat tamper resistant bait stations or traps should be placed every 30-50 foot (depending on the severity of infestation)
• Place bait stations around all entry doors
• Burrow baiting: place loose pellets or meal baits deep into the burrows

Interior Baiting

• Mice: Space placements at 8-12 foot intervals depending on severity of infestation
• Rats: Space placements at 15-30 foot intervals depending on severity of infestation
