As we head into late fall and winter, activities turn from harvesting and tillage to spreading and applying nutrients for next year’s crops. When a manure spreader is starting to show some wear and tear, I often get asked about trading in for a slightly newer model. While trading in for a newer spreader is always an option, there are some other ways to improve your equipment that can save you some money. One option is to replace just the tank portion of your manure spreader.

Applying manure on rough terrain certainly comes with challenges. A major issue is the added stress on the tank and units with a stationary tank bar. When a field is contour-heavy and requires many turns of the tractor and tank, a standard tank bar is forced sideways with each turn, adding stress to the bearings, coulter blades, mounts, and pivot points.
Efficiency is the name of the game in manure application; however, it’s challenging to keep things moving if you’re dealing with pit trash. Not only can unwanted debris slow you down with blockages, but a plugged nozzle can also cause uneven flow and streaking in the field.
