Pro: reduce weed pressure. Con: soil nitrogen may be tied up. Pro: reduce soil erosion. Con: potential for allelopathy. Pro: increase organic matter. Con: increased insect pressure. We could pro-con list cover crops all day with their potential for both positive and negative impacts. Which leads to the need for some perfecting of their management even though this conservation practice was introduced in American agriculture in the 1860s (White, 2014).

There typically isn’t much to get excited about when it comes to manure load stands – they are pretty straightforward. But tack on some functionality that makes pumpers’ lives easier and we can get a little more excited. Recently some of our custom pumpers have turned to the Nuhn 12” self-propelled load stand to not only cut down on the hassle of moving a load stand by hand but to speed up load time.
Here’s the skinny
The 12” stand has a 14” elbow at the top to decrease pressure and velocity. What’s that mean? You can fill at max speeds (12,000gpm to be exact) with reduced foam. Fins are also integrated within the elbow to prevent manure from spinning which reduces flares and splashing. Although you can opt for the basic wheel drive, for those who are sick of moving load stands by hand, the self-propelled option (manual, hydraulic controls) is more popular.
Other standard features
» Gas-powered engine
» 3/16” thick steel
» Hydraulic lift and castor jack
» 205/75D15 tires for increased stability
It may not be chock-full of crazy features or technology, but if speed and operator ease are something you have your eyes on, the Nuhn 12” load stand may be worth a look.

On February 1, 2023, ProVantage growers and advisors participated in the annual meeting to go over the 2022 crop year. For the last 10 years of the ProVantage program’s existence, the annual meeting serves as a connection point for the group to comb through growing season data from the tens of thousands of southeast Iowa acres currently enrolled in the program. This anonymous pool of field performance data allows us to extract themes and outcomes that lead to informed decision-making for the upcoming crop production year.More
One of the advantages that come with our diverse fleet of vehicles is our in-house maintenance. Ask any truck driver around here and they’ll rant and rave about our service technicians in the truck shop. Our February STRIVEr is no stranger to service calls but more importantly, Garrett Kline’s willingness to get a vehicle back on the road is second to none. When a truck needed to be repaired on a Sunday to get a driver out, Garrett quickly responded and is taking the STRIVEr honor for exceeding expectations.
A famous proverb states, “necessity is the mother of inventions”. For Randy Lackender, this proverb could be edited to state: frustration is the mother of inventions. With scrap steel, some ingenuity, and a desire to not dig another hole by hand while his skid loader idly sat by, Randy built his first backhoe attachment. After seeing how well the prototype worked, Randy went on to form Lackender, Inc and diversified his business with a wide array of skid loader attachments to make operators’ lives easier.More

Finding good help has been an issue that’s plagued farmers, livestock producers, and custom pumpers alike, long before the rest of the economy was hit with the abundance of jobs and shortage of labor. Tack on the long hours, breakneck pace, and seasonality, it becomes even more challenging to find people willing to join a custom manure crew.More
